“If you’re serious about changing your life, you’ll find a way. If you’re not, you’ll find an excuse.” – Jen Sincero
I was living in Winston-Salem, NC and I created a plan. The plan would call for the following:
- Quitting My job
- Moving down to Charlotte, NC (where I was going to school at the time)
It was a great plan. Now that I wasn’t working and driving over an hour to school each day I’d have all this extra time to do my writing and start my business.
But then school started..
All of sudden it was 3 weeks from my college graduation. I had barely written anything, and was yet to make a single dollar with this “business” idea.
I did, however, watch a ton of Netflix and eat a ton of Chipotle. So that’s cool.
As the end-of-semester stress and workload piled up, I decided I would focus exclusively on school.
“In 3 weeks, I’ll graduate, move out to SLC to be with Kels, and I’ll have all of this time to focus on myself and building my online business,” I thought.
Those 3 weeks came and went. I moved to Salt Lake City, I got a job personal training, and once again I found myself with a boatload of excuses for why I wasn’t writing and producing.
There was always a reason for why I wasn’t executing on things I said I was going to do.
And you know what, they were valid reasons. I had to go to bed because I have to be up early. I’ll do it tomorrow because it’s important to spend time with Kels. I have to get this stuff done for Metabolic Effect first because that’s what’s paying the bills.
All of that was true, and valid. ME, Kels, and sleep are all very important to me.
At some point though, you (when I say you, I mostly mean me) have to stop talking about what we’re going to do and just DO IT. Or don’t do it. Either way we need to commit. We need to stop playing so scared.
If we’re going to move forward in life, yes we, you, me, your dog, we need to quit procrastinating on our dreams. Life is short, peeps.
There’s a Latin saying that goes, “Fac, si facis.” It means, “Do it if you’re going to do it.”
Oddly enough, as I was writing this post I got this text from my brother Connor.
My recent talk-about-an-idea-but-don’t-do-anything has been to start a health and lifestyle company similar to Onnit.
Write out a list of everything you’re “going to do” – all your dreams, visions, and goals. Now, circle no more than 3 of those (the less the better), and cross out the rest. Whats ONE action step you can take in the next 24 hours on those dreams? Now do that shit!
I will too.
Remember, “A man who moves a mountain starts by carrying stones.” -Unknown (because that the type of philosophical shit that everybody keeps top of mind…)
But seriously, take one step, on one dream, today. A few of the most successful people I know have made some of the most mistakes on paper. They made wrong decision, followed a dead-end path, and used the wrong tools. But their bias towards movement and action has made up for any and all of their mistakes.
If you and I can create this one habit, of making moves on our dreams and letting the chips fall, our whole life is guaranteed to change.
Or as my bro Connor says, “Quit chirpin, and start making some moves.”
